Edward C. Clifton is an Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court since 1994. Prior to his appointment to the Rhode Island Superior Court he served as an Associate Judge of the Rhode Island District Court from 1993. Before becoming a judge he was the City Solicitor for the City of Providence from 1985-1991. With the exception of the period he served as City Solicitor, he was in the private practice of law from 1978 until 1993. He was an Assistant Public Defender for the State of Rhode Island from 1976-1978 and was a member of Rhode Island Legal Services, Inc. from 1975-1976. He received his law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1975. He received his undergraduate degree, in psychology, from the University of California, Berkeley in 1972. He currently serves on the Rhode Island Supreme Court Permanent Committee on Women and Minorities and serves as the chair of the subcommittee on employment.
